The Nimbin Community Centre committee is comprised of an eclectic group of dedicated volunteers who each have a strong connection and affiliation with the Nimbin community and its surrounds. Its members bring a plethora of skills and experience in developing community projects, supporting business activation and overseeing key decision making that helps shape the future of the village. Committee members strive to support staff and volunteers in our collective endeavours to ensure that Nimbin Community Centre remains a synergistic hub for creative and community development.
Wil Polson - President
Wil was born and raised in Nimbin and has been a committee member since 2021. Wil completed his PhD in Media and Communication at RMIT University in 2020 before returning to Nimbin where he hopes to utilise his skills to support and develop community projects. He has been actively engaged with the community since a young age and offers a high level of critical thinking, research, writing and creative direction to the NCCI committee and broader Nimbin community.
Darren Maxwell - Vice President
Darren has been living and working in the Nimbin area for about 5 years as a builder and handyman. He has been part of the NCCI committee since 2017. He was invited to join the committee in 2018 as he was interested in getting to know more about the village and community. Darren brings a fresh viewpoint to the committee and is much appreciated for his laconic observations that provide a great summation of the issues being dealt with at committee meetings.
Diana Roberts - Treasurer
Diana has been on the management committee of Nimbin Community Centre since its inception. While representing Nimbin on Lismore City Council, a position she held for over 12 years before retiring, she drove the vision that resulted in Nimbin Central School becoming the Community Centre we know today. Her community involvements over more than 40 years are too extensive to list but her passions have focused on building resilient communities, sustainable development and environmental protection. David Hallett - Secretary
Arriving in Nimbin in May 1973 for the Aquarius Festival, David has lived in and around the Nimbin Valley for the past 40+ years. He has been the President of the Nimbin School of Arts for over 30 years and has been particularly involved in visual and performing arts programs, exhibitions, cabarets and concerts, and in supporting the development of the arts in Nimbin. David has been a musician since childhood and is best known as an award-winning performance poet who has managed poetry venues in Lismore and Byron Bay for many years.
Michael Balderstone
Michael dropped out of his London stockbroking job in 1972 in search of something more meaningful and drove overland to India looking for it. The hashish in Afghanistan and the mushroom omelette in Bali tipped him upside down and gave him plenty to think about. He then spent ten years wandering the planet wondering what to do next as he looked for a like minded community, eventually finding it in Nimbin about thirty years ago. (more)
Louise Graves
Louise arrived in Nimbin in 1985 and started the famous and iconic Nimbin Museum with (then husband) Michael Balderstone. She is a trained Registered Nurse and has also worked as a Family Support worker for the Nimbin Neighbourhood and Information Centre and as a teacher for the Nimbin Community School at that time.
